In 1177 King Henry II made Thebold Fitzwalter chief Butler of Ireland. Fitzwalter came to Ireland as part of the Norman invasion with Richard de Clare. They were awarded large swaths of land in County Cork. As they grew importance they were named Earls of Ormond. They had fortress in Gowran and later a castle in Kilkenny from where they feuded constantly with their neighbors the Fitzgeralds.

James Butler the 3erd Earl of Ormond acquired the castle in 1391. Today the castle is owned by the Irish government. There is a Butler reunion every three years at Kilkenny Castle where there is also a Butler genealogy archive.

Our sister site namegameshop.com sells shirts, mugs and many other items featuring family crests and surnames with flags and symbols to reflect your national heritage. You can also go directly to the Butler page at our Zazzle.com store.
